How To Setup A Karaoke System With A Laptop
Like a cookbook recipe, I’ve divided this section into “ingredients” and “steps”. This familiar format will help you to easily identify the items you need and what needs to be done as well.
What You Will Need
Laptop
3.5mm AUX cable
Karaoke Machine
Obviously, you’ll be needing a notebook computer to set this up. You do not need to have an Alienware specs for this. In fact, even a netbook will do.
Your laptop will have 2 main purposes:
1. As a song source
2. For sound quality setting
You can offer the largest selection of song choices if you’re connected online. You can subscribe to online karaoke sits like Red Karaoke or The Karaoke Channel.
We prefer The Karaoke Channel since it allows you to download songs to your laptop for offline use.
If you want to go free all the way, you can use YouTube. Search for your favorite songs using this format: [song name]karaoke.
Be sure to install an equalizer on your laptop. That way you can adjust the quality of sound coming out of it.
Connecting your laptop to a karaoke machine can be done 2 ways, either with Bluetooth or wired. We prefer wired connection since it’s more stable.
Fortunately, you don’t need any complicated cables for this. All you need is a 3.5mm cable, also known as a headphone jack.
Except for some kiddie karaoke toys, most if not all karaoke machines have a line-in socket for a 3.5mm AUX cable. Bluetooth connectivity is becoming a standard feature as well.
What you’ll be needing is a karaoke with great PA speaker. Most of these types have their own built-in equalizer as well.
They also include 1 to 2 microphones upon purchase, depending on the model.
How To Actually Connect Them
STEP 1
You won’t be needing any special software to hook up your laptop computer to your karaoke machine. Just plug the cable into your notebook’s headphone jack and to the equivalent line in on your karaoke machine.
STEP 2
Turn on your karaoke machine and plug in your microphones. Be sure to turn up the mic volume. It is best to consult the manual if you have a more complicated type of setup.
STEP 3
Fire up a song from your collection, whether from YouTube or from your subscribed karaoke sites. If you don’t have them setup yet, you can just play any songs locally to your computer just to test the sound output.

STEP 4
Once the sound is coming up well from your karaoke machine’s speakers, adjust the sound quality. This can be done either directly from karaoke system or if it’s lacking an equalizer feature, you can adjust it from your laptop.
STEP 5
Once’s you’re satisfied with the setup, you can start doing a dry run and play a karaoke song from your laptop. Sing through the microphone and make sure that the volume of both the music and voice blends well.
To make this setup even better, be sure to connect your karaoke system to your TV. Ideally, you will want to be able to actually sing in front of an audience or a TV instead of doing it in front of your laptop.
How To Do Karaoke Without A Machine
You can also do karaoke without having to connect your laptop to a karaoke machine. All you will need is an external speaker with both a mic input. The laptop and the mic are both connect to the external speaker.
However, don’t expect it to produce the same high-quality sounds unless they are PA speakers. It is a great option, though, if you just want to do some practice runs or haven’t decided on which karaoke system model to purchase yet.
